Number Line

The Real Number Line

A visualization tool used to analyze and compare the elements of the real number set (ℜ). The number line is a graph of all the numbers from smallest to largest.

Addition

The operation of addition represents the action of merging, or combining multiple values (addends) into a sum.

Subtraction

The opposite operation of addition. In subtraction we decrease a value by a given amount.

Multiplication

Represents the repeated operation of addition. Instead of adding the same value repeatedly, we can instead multiply it by the number of times it was added.

Division

The opposite operation of multiplication, in division we break a value down into 2 factors. Using one factor, we divide the value by it to yield the other (the quotient).

Absolute Values

An operation which finds the magnitude of a given value (b). The magnitude is simply the positive quantity of the value (ie drop the negative).

Powers

Represents the repeated operation of multiplication by the same value. The power is the base value (b) multiplied by itself n number of times (the exponent).

Roots

The opposite of the power operation. Instead we find the root (r), which when multiplied by itself n number of times gives us the base (b).

Order of Operations

The order in which the operations are performed.

Writing Mathematics

How to write various basic mathematical statements.
